Everyone has a role to play in ending family violence. There is no need to feel helpless.
You can make a difference
Home is not always a safe place. Everyone has a role to play in ending violence in our communities.
If you are not sure about offering help to someone you think is experiencing abuse, consider the following concerns and how you can respond:
Concern:
"It's really none of my business."
Consider: It could be a matter of life and death. Violence in the community is everyone's business.
Concern:
"I don't know what to say."
Consider: Showing that you are concerned is a good start. You can say: "I care," "I believe in you," or "It's not your fault."
Concern:
"I might make it worse."
Consider: Doing nothing could make things worse. Abuse often gets worse over time if unaddressed.
Concern:
"It's not serious enough for police."
Consider: Police are trained to respond. They have resources to help families even when behaviour isn't criminal.
Family violence is a community issue.
