Pre-Events

Sunday, February 4

Abram-Village
I Join In, 1:00pm-2:00pm, Evangeline Recreation Centre in Abram-Village

In support of Family Violence Prevention Week, there will be a free public skate and hot chocolate so come and enjoy with you family.  There will be tables with educational information on Family Violence prevention. This event is in collaboration between the PEI Premier's Action Committee on Family Violence, the Evangeline Recreation Center, the Evangeline Communication Cooperative and the Evangeline Community Consultative Group.

*During the week of Feb 11-17  info-clips will be on Cable 13 Community channel with special messages about family violence prevention.

Saturday, February 10

Summerside
Community Yoga Class, 1:00-2:00pm, Danspirations Studio, 293 Water Street, Suite 1 (Storm Date: February 11)
Danspirations is hosting a community yoga class to kick off Family Violence Prevention Week in Summerside. Admission is by donation to PEI Family Violence Prevention Services and participants are invited to wear purple in solidarity with ending violence against women.  Sponsored by the PEI Family Violence Prevention Services  with support from the Premier's Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention.  For more information please call (902) 439-9897.

Week Long Events

Summerside, Random Acts of Kindness Week, February 11-17,
Athena Consolidated, Summerside Intermediate School, Ecole-sur-Mer and Three Oaks High School
Banners will be displayed where students can write their ideas for showing kindness or ways to promote healthy relationships. You've Been Caught cards - are a fun way to encourage kids to spread kindness. Purple Day. Reading school announcements that promote kindness.  $25 movie gift cards will be given to each school for a draw for students who participate in the activities. Sponsored by the City of Summerside with support from the Premier's Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention.

O'Leary, February 12-16
Each year at Bloomfield Elementary, O’Leary Elementary and Hernewood Jr High School, they help organize the following activities: Putting up posters where students can write their ideas for showing kindness or a good deed. Pass it on Cards – a fun way to encourage kids to spread kindness. Purple Day. Reading announcements. They offer a $25 movie card to each school for a draw for the participants in the activities.  Sponsored by the Village of O'Leary with support from the Premier's Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention.

Alberton, February 12-16

Each year at Alberton Elementary and Westisle Composite High School, they help organize the following activities: Putting up posters where students can write their ideas for showing kindness or a good deed. Pass it on Cards – a fun way to encourage kids to spread kindness. Purple Day. Reading announcements. Pancake Breakfast. They offer a $25 movie card to each school for a draw for the participants in the activities. Sponsored by the Town of Alberton with support from the Premier's Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention.

Tignish, February 12-16
Each year at Ecole Pierre Chiasson, ME Callaghan and Tignish Elementary, they help organize the following activities:  Putting up posters where students can write their ideas for showing kindness or a good deed.    Pass it on Cards – a fun way to encourage kids to spread kindness. Purple Day. Reading announcements. Pancake Breakfast. They offer a $25 movie card to each school for a draw for the participants in the activities. Sponsored by the Town of Tignish with support from the Premier's Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention.

Town of Montague, February 12-16
The library in Montague will have a resource table (brochures, tattoos, booklets) set up all week and on Wednesday there will be cupcakes and refreshments. Sponsored by the Town of Montague with support from the Premier's Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention.

Sunday February 11

West River United Church, Cornwall
Individuals and families are encourgaged to "Wear Purple" to church. Children's Time will include a story from the recommended reading list. Community resources will be available during fellowship time along with cookies baked by youth group members. The Sunday School will begin to create a hands mural based on the storybook. All welcome! Sponsored by the West River United Church with support from the Premier's Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention.

Monday February 12

Community of Miltonvale Park
Blanket Making,
10:30 a.m., Milton Community Hall
There will be a blanket making activity at the Milton Community Hall (fleece fringed and knotted blankets) which will be donated to Anderson House for their clients. This would be held Monday morning, February 12, following our regular community seniors exercise class. The hall is located at 7 New Glasgow Road -Rte 224, at its intersection with Rte 7, the Rustico Road in North Milton. Sponsored by the Community of Miltonvale Park with support from the Premier's Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention.

The Rural Municipality of Miltonvale Park will also be hosting a Lunch and Learn following the Blanket Making at the Milton Community Hall at approximately 12 noon on Monday, February 12 - with Gloria Dennis, Outreach Coordinator for Queens County with PEI Family Violence Prevention Services. Lunch will be provided to those who pre-register at admin@miltonvalepark.com or 902-368-3090 by Friday, Feb. 9. Funded in part through the PEI Seniors' Secretariat.

East Prince Outreach Open House, 263 Heather Moyse Dr, Suite 9, 2:00pm-4:00pm
We have moved! PEI Family Violence Prevention Services is pleased to invite members of the community to visit our new East Prince Outreach office located in the Harbour Quay building on the Summerside waterfront. Tuesday February 13

Souris
Walk in Silence, 11:45, Souris Regional School

The walk will begin at Souris Regional School, walking down Church Street to Main Street finishing at St. Mary's Hall. Cookies and Hot Chocolate will be at the hall afterwards and the Staff Sergeant will speak. Sponsored by the Town of Souris with support from the Premier's Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention.

Town of Georgetown
Walk in Silence, Storm date of Friday Feb 16th
Gathering in the Georgetown School auditorium for a brief message regarding Family Violence, prevention efforts and help available. Participants will then walk from the school down Main Street to the end of Kent Street, then returning to the school for refreshments. Sponsored by the Town of Georgetown with support from the Premier's Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention.

Wednesday February 14

WEAR PURPLE DAY across Prince Edward Island
Islanders are asked to wear purple to remember victims of violence and their families. As a neighbour, friend, family member or coworker you can help prevent and respond to abuse in our community. Share your photos on facebook.com/govpe or twitter.com/InfoPEI.

Charlottetown 
9th Annual Walk in Silence for Victims of Family Violence,
February 14th, 12:00 pm, Coles Building
The Walk in Silence for Victims of Family Violence is a symbolic gesture to give voice to family violence victims who remain silent out of shame or fear. Everyone can play a part in preventing and responding to family violence, whether as a neighbor, friend, family member, or co-worker. Walk with other Islanders and show your commitment to preventing family violence.

The walk will begin in front of the Coles Building in Charlottetown at 12 noon ending with a reception and remarks at City Hall.
                   
Morell Fire Department, Morell
Walk in Silence, Wednesday, February 14th, 11:00 am, Morell Regional High School
Morell Regional High School students and staff are having a Walk in Silence for Victims of Domestic Violence on Wednesday, February 14 starting at the school at 11:00.  Before the walk, there will give a brief message to the students that the walk is designed to raise awareness about family violence and also making a symbolic gesture to family violence victims that they are not alone - help and support is available. The walk will be through the village of Morell and we will be escorted by the RCMP and the Morell Fire Department. MP Sidney MacEwen will also be in attendance.
 
Community members are invited to attend and are encouraged to wear purple. We will end the walk at the school with refreshments for everyone. Sponsored by the Morell Fire Department with support from the Premier's Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention.

Nous allons développer une campagne de promotion qui sensibilise les familles au fait de la violence familiale, et encourage les parents à en discuter ouvertement avec leurs enfants à la maison. La campagne va inclure une annonce d'une page dans La Voix acadienne avec des faits, statistiques, et questions ciblées qu'on encouragera les familles à discuter ensemble. La campagne sera aussi circulée sur les médias sociaux, accompagnée de vidéo-clips. Le tout sera lancé sous forme de concours donnant l'opportunité aux familles qui participent de gagner des prix.  Sponsored by Actions Femmes Î.-P.-É. with support from the Premier's Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention.

Wednesday, February 14th
There will be a closed session for their clients, adults on the Autism Spectrum, to have a facilitated discussion about family violence. Sponsored by the Stars for Life Foundation with support from the Premier's Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention.

Summerside
Walk in Silence, 12:00pm, Summerside City Hall
Everyone is invited to join us for a Walk in Silence to raise awareness and stand in solidarity with victims of family violence. We will be starting at Summerside City Hall, heading down Fitzroy Street, left down Central street, left down Water street, and left up Summer street to return to City Hall where light refreshments will be served. Sponsored by the City of Summerside with support from the Premier's Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention.

Thursday February 15

Community Legal Information Association, Inc., 40 Enman Cresent, Room 234, Charlottetown, P.E.I., C1E 1E6, 12.00 to 1.00
The event will be a brown bag lunch with a presentation and facilitated discussion on family law principles and sexual crimes and an overview of the law re: family violence and sexual assault. Participants will be exposed to the various resources available on PEI for individuals and families experiencing domestic abuse and sexual violence. This knowledge can be used at work, at home or in the community. There will be a PowerPoint presentation. Participants will have the chance to ask questions and will be provided with free legal information booklets on family law, family violence and sexual crimes.  Sponsored by the Community Legal Information Association with support from the Premier's Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention.

"Make It Your Business" Screening, Holland College, Florence Simmons Performance Hall, Charlottetown, Thursday, February 15th (storm date Thursday, February 22) at 5pm with a reception starting at 4:30pm.
"Make It Your Business" is a new video series that offers brief, practical examples of how workers or other witnesses can recognize signs of family violence in public places and places of business and how to safely take action. All videos were written and produced in Charlottetown. They are designed for workplace training and for educating the general public. Covering common kinds of violence you might witness - whether sexual assault at a parking meter, child abuse, abuse of older adults, online harassment,or an abusive public argument - this series will be a major contribution to workplace training and to public understanding of what we can all do to make preventing violence all of our business.

The first public screening of Make It Your Business! will take place on Thursday, February 15th (storm date Thursday, February 22) at Florence Simmons Performance Hall at 5pm with a reception starting at 4:30pm.

Charlottetown, U.P.E.I. Campus
There will be Bystander training during Family Violence Prevention week, Thursday Feb 15, from 11:30 to 1:30. There will be light refreshments. To register email kmorse@upei.ca. Sponsored by U.P.E.I with support from the Premier's Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention.

Kensington Police Service, Community Walk, 1:00pm, Kensington, P.E.I., C0B 1M0
A community walk will start at the Town of Kensington office and travel from there to Broadway Street, onto Commercial Street and back to the town where refreshments will be served. During this week, the Malpeque Bay Credit Union will have a display set up regarding Family Violence with related materials.  Sponsored by the Kensington Police Service with support from the Premier's Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention.

6th Annual Sweetheart Dinner for Anderson House, Saturday, February 17th, 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm, Red Shores Racetrack and Casino, Charlottetown.

Wrapping up Family Violence Prevention Week (Feb 11 - 17, 2018), this delightful event celebrates relationships: partners, family, friends, co-workers and community. The evening features a gourmet 3-course buffet dinner, simulcast horse racing and "Lucky You!" draws for some amazing prize
packages including a trip for two from WestJet!

Tickets are $60 each (the cost to shelter a woman or child for one night at Anderson House) and include a $25 tax receipt. All proceeds benefit Anderson House, an emergency shelter for women and children who are in need of safety because of violence in their lives.
