In Prince Edward Island, an average of 30 women and children use support services through Transition House Association each week. As public awareness of family violence grew over the past years, it became clear that policies and protocols needed to be put in place for safe, effective and appropriate responses for victims of women abuse.

In 1981, the first private members motion was made to the House of Commons to address family violence. It is now 20 years later and many changes have taken place to address this important issue yet domestic violence continues.

In Prince Edward Island, a Premier's Action Committee, made of up representatives from education to the legal system, is currently working to address family violence prevention.
